Must-do Milford, Kayaking in Fiordland.
26 April 2022
Milford Sound or Piopiotahi is located deep within Fiordland National Park in the South West corner of New Zealand's South Island. It is arguably the Jewel in the Crown of The Te Wahipounamu UNESCO World Heritage site and is a genuine must-do when visiting New Zealand.
This is a truly special place that despite it's remote location, is accessible via the incredibly scenic Milford Road which crosses the main divide of the Southern Alps. This unforgettable journey winds it's way through impressive glacially carved valleys, ancient native forests, beautiful lakes and thundering waterfalls before you descend between the towering Fiordland mountains and into the tranquillity of Milford Sound.
The majority of visitors to Milford Sound are day trippers from Queenstown, and due to the distance and time constraints choose a scenic looping boat cruise of the Sound (actually it's a Fiord but we won't bore you with that!).
We have designed two of our South Island 10 day tours a little differently and instead stay much closer to Fiordland in Te Anau to halve the travel time, and allow us a full day in Milford itself. Our NZ Adrenalin and NZ Adventure tours both include a fantastic guided sea kayaking day with Rosco's Milford Kayaks which allows you to paddle the typically calm Fiordland waters amongst sheer mountains that rise straight up out of the water and to giant waterfalls and incredible hanging glacial valleys.
By kayak you also open up the potential for once in a lifetime close-up wildlife encounters.
With Milford Sound being a marine reserve it is a haven for seals, dolphins, penguins and if you're incredibly lucky even whales and Orca.
Even on a wet day in Milford (which there are plenty of) the experience is often magical as hundreds of temporary waterfalls appear and create an awe-inspiring natural environment that not many get to witness. Oh and on a trip to Milford you'll often get to meet our Cheeky Kea, the world's only alpine parrot....how cool is that!
Join Adventure Junkies on an adventure-filled 10 Day South Island tour between the months of October and April and visit world-class destinations such as Milford Sound for unbeatable adventure experiences in the finest locations.
